Chiropractor

A chiropractor focuses his or her practice on patients with musculoskeletal problems; primarily those related to the spine. Chiropractic practice is geared toward pain relief; to facilitate this, the chiropractor manipulates and realigns the spine. However, chiropractic practice is founded on the belief that maladjustments of the spinal column or vertebrae can impede the normal function of the body on many levels. Chiropractic physicians take a holistic approach to healthcare, and the treatment they offer is drug-free and non-surgical, and often includes modification of the patient’s lifestyle.

Chiropractors need to possess a high degree of manual dexterity and must have keen observation skills for detecting physical abnormalities. In order to become a chiropractor, you must be able to work independently and be self-motivated. As in most healthcare careers, chiropractors must be empathic and have a passion for helping people.

Training and Credentials Required
Every state in the US regulates chiropractors, and prospective chiropractors must earn a license by passing an examination, among other requirements. A chiropractor can only practice in the state where he or she is licensed. Typically chiropractors must have at least two years of undergraduate education, and some states require a bachelors degree for licensing. Additionally, all states require completion of a four-year program at an accredited chiropractic college and thereby earning the Doctor of Chiropractic degree. Chiropractors must also fulfill continuing education requirements to maintain their license. The Council on Chiropractic Education accredits about 18 chiropractic programs and institutions.

Future Prospects
Employment opportunities for chiropractors are rising faster than average as a result of increasing demand for alternative healthcare. Many Americans find the drug-free, surgery-free approach appealing.

Salary Range
The median salary, as of 2002, for chiropractors was $65,330. The middle 50% earned between $44,140 and $102,400 per year. Self-employed chiropractors can expect to earn significantly more than salaried chiropractors.
