Surgical Technologist

Surgical technologists are often referred to as “scrubs,” because their duties include sterilizing the operating room. They work closely with registered nurses, surgeons, anesthesiologists, and others involved in performing surgery.

Surgical technologists aid the patient in getting ready and also prepare the operating room. During surgery, they perform various tasks usually related to the management of tools and equipment, and disposal of surgical waste.

Surgical technologists need outstanding manual dexterity as they handle surgical instruments, and must do so with speed and precision. They need to be attentive and alert and anticipate the needs of the surgical team. It is important that they keep up to date with developments in the field of surgery. Lastly, they must be orderly, meticulous and emotionally grounded enough to work well under a great deal of pressure.

Education and Credentials Required
There are three hundred and sixty one accredited programs where surgical technologists can train, including those based in community and junior colleges, vocational schools, universities, hospitals, and the armed forces.

Technologists can earn the designation Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) if they graduate from an accredited program and pass an exam. This designation is a major advantage in the job market, and requires continuing education to maintain.

Future Prospects
Employment opportunities for surgical technologists are expected to rise faster than average. The ageing of the baby boomers drives the increase in demand. While hospitals will continue to be the main type of employer, most new jobs will arise in offices of physicians and private clinics. Technological advances such as fiber-optic and laser technology will make surgery less risky and thus more accessible, thereby driving demand upward.

Salary Range
The median salary, as of 2002, for surgical technologists was $31,210. Experience, location, skill, reputation, hours worked and other factors impact income. Surgical technologists rarely pay for their own health benefits and retirement benefits, as they are rarely self-employed.
